Thisell's songs intensify in the near-silence

A singer-songwriter more sensitive than most

Imagine street racing with banging exhaust pipes in city streets. Then imagine the complete opposite. In the 2010s, Björn Peter Thisell from Hässleholm released a couple of albums worth listening to under the band name Thisell, via a Dutch record label. But now it’s really happening. This solo debut is a textbook example of music having the greatest impact when it’s least likely to disturb.

He sings with a vulnerable, though not really fragile, voice; he has all the stability he needs. There are moments — “(At night) Morning light” is one — when he reminds us of a sparse Christian Kjellvander, even though Thisell has nothing of the baritone’s rich growl. But they both have in common a precise distinction, a laser beam of emotion and tonal accuracy. We could and should probably name more names: My Morning Jacket, Iron & Wine, Neil Young with Nicolette Larson, a tender and sensitive Ryan Adams. Will that be enough? Good.

With all of the above he shares not only an enthusiasm for western folk songs and a love for pedal steel and violin, but also the ability to know when enough is enough. The accompaniment will fade away and the neat beat stop just when his voice and perhaps a lone instrument reach the choruses, most noticeably in “Poncho”. This is as effective a way of marking where and when the important thing is to be said as turning the controls up to max. My heart inside out, I won’t be near; to tell you the words I need to hear, are words I catch. There’s no need to have them backed by a guitar solo from Kirk Hammett. The music intensifies in the near-silence.

Another favorite, quite different, is the encompassing "Pray a star shines". Karin Wiberg plays a mighty fine violin when she wants to, but from time to time she’ll rather evoke white noise that sounds like an angst-ridden saw blade. In contrast to the pretty guitar strum and a sad melody, sung in an intimate duet with Beatrice Rosdahl, it contributes to a reverent atmosphere.

There are also a couple of songs here with evenly and clearly marked four-bar time, nothing wrong with them. But the unannouncedly sprightly and melodiously smooth "Piano song" is only available in the vinyl version. You should hear that too.
